Overseas Fraud on UK Card Falls

Overseas fraud on UK cards at the lowest level fsince 1999

16th June 2005

The level of fraud committed overseas using UK credit cards has fallen to its lowest level since 1999 according to new figures.

Apacs, the body which represents UK card issuing companies, said that the total level of such fraud was £92.5m last year, and that just under half was committed in just 3 countries - France, Spain, and the United States.

Apacs said that the fall in fraud could be attributed in part to advanced new fraud detection systems that have come into use, which can detect unusual spending patterns and block suspicious card use before too much fraud can occur.

The concentration of fraud in countries popular with holidaymakers highlights the need for tourists to take care with their credit card details - only to take cards they actually intend to use abroad, never to leave cards unattended, and to make sure credit card receipts are disposed of properly.
