Egg Newsletter Criticised

The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled an Egg newsletter as irresponsible

14th April 2004

The Advertising Standards Authority has criticised a newsletter sent to Egg customers in January 2004.

The email newsletter suggested that people 'Suffering from SAD (skint and depressed)' should 'throw a sickie and bed down for the day' or 'find...a pampering fixer-upper or just say 'to hell with it' and stick it on the card'.

The ASA ruled that the email was irresponsible as it encouraged people to take time off work and incur extra debt at a time of year when many people have already spent significantly more than they've earned.

Egg have defended their approach, but agreed not to use the promotion again.
