Debit Cards Overtake Cash
UK debit card use was worth more than cash for the first time in 2005
24th April 2006
New figures released by Apacs show that shoppers spent more with debit cards than with cash in 2005. While £81bn was spent with cash, down 4%, debit card spending rose by 9% to hit £89bn.
Credit card spending remained unchanged at £61bn.
Plastic's growing dominance was underlined by the value of cheques being written for purchases, which now stands at a meagre £9bn a year.
The rise of debit cards to the top of the retail spending league has been hailed as a remarkable success story given that they were only introduced to the UK a couple of decades ago.
