Halifax Charity Cards Raise £1.5m

3 of the UK's biggest charities share £1.5m raised by charity credit cards

30th January 2006

Halifax's credit card division have announced that their range of charity credit cards raised a total of £1.5m in 2005, shared between 3 of the UK's biggest charities, Cancer Research UK, Mencap and the NSPCC.

The funds bring the total raised to £18m since the Halifax Charity Credit Card was launched in 1988.

Charity cards are a kind of credit card which is 'branded' by the charity but operated by a bank, in this case Halifax. When a customer opens a card account, the charity is given a donation of around £20, depending on the particular card. Further small donations are made as the cardholder spends - in effect, a 'cashback card' where charities benefit from the cashback rather than the cardholder.

Halifax's Ian Corfield, head of card services, commented:

"We're delighted to be able to continue to support these three charities. Charity credit cards are an ideal way for customers to help their chosen charity on an ongoing basis."
