Barclaycard Drops Nectar, Customers Unhappy

Customer discontent as Barclaycard replaces Nectar scheme with travel insurance offer

22nd August 2005

Barclaycard is to drop the Nectar loyalty scheme from the end of August in a move which has proved less than popular with some of its customers.

The Nectar program, which rewards spending at a variety of outlets including Sainsbury's, will be replaced with a free travel insurance offer and discounts on travel.

However, these deals will only be available if bought from Barclaycard Travel Service using a Barclaycard - seemingly a rather limited offer compared to some competing cards, leading to some vociferous complaints from Barclays customers.

For example, William Wood of East Sussex told The Guradian that the offer was an insult to his intelligence, and that he'd stop using the card once Nectar points were no longer available.
