Brits to Bring £475m Home from Holiday

Up to £475m worth of unused foreign currency estimated to be brought home this year

29th August 2005

A survey by Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) suggests that British holidaymakers will return home with around £475m in unspent foreign currency this year. This equates to a little over 3% of the total amount spent abroad by UK leisure travellers.

While many people are likely to keep the currency for next years trip (48%) or convert it back to sterling (43%), 23% say they would donate it to charity and 31% would give it to friends or family who are travelling.

A RBS representative commented:

"It's heartening to see the holiday spirit comes home with many people and that they're happy to make a gift of their left over currency. For those who want to keep the cash for their next holiday, The Royal Bank will exchange any unused currency back into sterling."
