The £1bn Foreign Currency Stockpile
Research by M&S Money suggests up to £1bn in foreign currency is lying around in British homes
31st October 2005
Research by Marks and Spencer Money suggests that up to £1bn in foreign currency may be stockpiled in Britain's homes, as travellers forget to convert unused travel money back to sterling.
The survey estimates that an average of £16 of currency per person returns to Britain with the traveller, and is never converted back.
Three quarters of the people surveyed said they never changed money back, a third leave it untouched in a drawer or handbag, while only 61% claim that they will definitely use it for future trips.
