Surcharging ATMs to Dominate by October 2007

Sainsbury's Bank predicts that fee-charging ATMs will outnumber free ones by October 2007

30th January 2006

Sainsbury's Bank has predicted that the rise in fee-charging cash machines will continue, and that they will outnumber free-to-use ATMs by October 2007, in a little over 18 months time.

The bank bases their calculation on the findings that around 286 surcharging ATMs are being installed every month, compared to just 53 free ones.

The report also says that the increased numbers of fee-charging machines mean heftier bills for consumers, with a predicted £140m in charges being made in 2006 for people accessing their own cash.

Sainsbury's say they are strongly supportive of stronger regulation of fee-charging cash machines, while they have built up their own free-to-use network by 129% over the last 2 years, with plans to introduce many more.
