Banks Rule Out Sharing Branches
Proposal for sharing high street branches in small communities rejected
16th May 2005
The British Banking Association (BBA) has ruled out a proposal for sharing high street bank branches.
The plan was put forward by the Campaign for Community Banking Services (CCBS) in an attempt to ensure at least one bank branch remained open in small towns and villages.
Under the rejected sharing system, 'white label' branches would house various high street competitors, lowering overheads.
The banks said they had piloted the idea and found it wasn't cost effective, and that it had the potential to harm local Post Offices, assertions rejected by the CCBS.
