RBS Promises 300 Free ATMs

Royal Bank of Scotland promises to install 300 cash machines in deprived areas

31st July 2006

The Royal Bank of Scotland have promised to install 300 new free cash machines in some of the country's poorest areas.

Many deprived parts of the country have been worst hit by branch closures, with fee-charging ATMs filling the gap, leading to  people who can least afford it being charged to access their own cash.

RBS have invited the public, MPs, credit unions and others to nominate suitable areas for the new machines, which the bank says will be in place 'for the long term'.

Rivals HBOS followed up with their own announcement of 100 new machines, while HSBC are expected to make a similiar announcement shortly.
