October 2004 saw a huge increase in phishing attempts, doubling compared to the previous month.
Phishing is a fast-growing method of fraud where customers of financial institutions such as banks are tricked into giving out their sensitive details to a fraudster, after receiving an email purporting to come from their bank.
The Anit-Phishing Working Group, which monitors worldwide phishing activity, said it identified over six and a half thousand new phishing emails in October, and said that these fraud attempts were growing at a rate of over 35% a month.
