Phishing Pair Jailed
UK-based 'Phishers' jailed for 4 and 6 years
29th June 2005
A pair of fraudsters have been sentenced to 6 and 4 years in jail after being found guilty of stealing up to £6.5m through identity fraud.
American Douglas Havard, based in Leeds, bought stolen bank details from a Russian 'Phishing' gang, and used them to make counterfeit credit cards and cashcards.
Havard is known to have stolen £700,000 this way, although the total is believed to be much higher, and was sentenced to 6 years.
His co-accused, Lee Elwood of Glasgow, pleaded guilty to the same offences and received a sentence of 4 years.
The convictions were a result of a joint investigation by UK and USA authorities into Eastern European crime syndicates targetting UK banks and customers.
