Online Banking Rises in Popularity

Online banking rises 63% since 2003

2nd March 2006

A survey by Alliance and Leicester has shown a dramatic increase in the popularity of online banking , with the number of people using it to manage their current accounts rising 63% since 2003.

More than half of bank customers use online banking at least sometimes, while nearly a third use it a couple of times a month and 10% every week.

The report shows that checking balances is the most popular activity, with 96% of users doing this, with 76% making payments or transferring funds.

Of those who are not yet banking online, security concerns were one of the main factors in their reluctance.

The report predicts that by 2020, the internet will be as common in people's homes as television now is, and that around 95% of people will manage their finances online.
