First Direct already offer text banking, which gives regular updates to customers by SMS, but the new MoniLink system will offer more features and on-demand.

The service will let customers view balances, get mini-statements, and top-up pay as you go phones using a system which is said to be much more secure than online banking.

The MoniLink system was developed by IT firm Morse and cash machine operator Link, and future plans include widening the system to include a more secure replacement for today's online banking methods.
