HSBC Call Centre Fraud Arrest
Employee of the banking goliath suspected of assisting fraud
28th June 2006
An Indian man has been arrested on suspicion of helping to commit a financial fraud that cost British 16 banking customers a total of £230,000.
The man, Nadeem Kashmiri, worked at HSBC's Bangalore call-centre, and was alledgedly caught accessing files he had no reason to open, and is suspected of passing on details he found to a team of fraudsters who went on to transfer money out of UK accounts and into ones held at Indian banks.
HSBC are downplaying the fact that the fraud apparently occurred at an overseas call centre, which are already extremely unpopular with many UK banking customers. The bank said that levels of fraud committed by its employees in India were 'much lower' than that of its UK workers, and confirmed that the victims of the fraud have been fully reimbursed.
