HSBC New Year Chaos
A systems crash at HSBC led to customers unable to access their cash
4th January 2005
Thousands of HSBC customers were left cashless over the New Year holiday, as a technical hitch prevented many cash machines and credit cards from working.
Shoppers eager to snap up sale bargains were told they had reached their daily withdrawal limit when they tried to withdraw cash from cashpoints, while both credit and debit cards were rejected at tills.
Online banking was also affected, leading to fears that accounts may have been hacked into.
HSBC says that this was purely a technical hitch rather than a security breach, and that services would be fully restored today with no loss to customers account balances.
