Possible French Bid for A&L

Speculation that French bank Credit Agricole is onsidering a bid for Alliance and Leicester is confirmed

French bank Credit Agricole has confirmed that it is considering a £6bn bid for Alliance and Leicester, the UK's 7th largest bank.

The possible bid was at the 'evaulation' stage according to the French, who are also said to be considering other potential targets.

No formal comment was forthcoming from A&L, although a spokesman confirmed that they were aware of the possibility of a bid being made.

Shares in A&L rose 28p to £11.43 yesterday as the markets responded to the news.
