Majority Against Charging ATMs
A survey by Citizens Advice shows the overwhelming majority of the public are against fee-charging cash machines
5th May 2006
A survey by charity Citizens Advice has shown the public to be overwhelmingly in favour of free-to-use cash mahines, with 93% saying that all ATMs should be fee free.
The online poll conducted throughout March on the charity's website also revealed that nearly half the people who had used a fee-charging machine said they had not been warned about the charge in advance, despite new regulations on such fees being made more prominent.
While most (88%) people would pay to withdraw their money if there was no alternative machine available, most thought that 30p was the maximum they should be asked to pay, when the average fee actually charged is £1.75.
The number of charging cash machines in the UK has risen rapidly in recent years, and it's estimated that 23,000 of the country's 56,000 ATMs now charge for each use.
