New Rise in Fee-Charging Cash Machines
1 in 8 new cash machines charge a fee

The number of cash machines in the UK rose to 54,000 last year, according to figures from Apacs (Association of Payment Clearing Services)..
However, out of the 8,000 new machines, 7,000 were 'convenience' machines run by independant companies, which charge a fee for every withdrawal. Such ATMs are the subject of a Treasury committee investigation, following conerns over the level of charges.
However, it appears that customers may be voting with their feet and avoiding charged ATMs - despite over 4 out of 10 of the UK's cash machines now charging a fee, they account for only 1 in 20 withdrawals made.
