Fear of Checking Bank Balance

Survey shows that 20% are scared of checking their bank account balance

A survey by banking group Lloyds TSB suggests that 20% of people regularly avoid checking their bank balances, in a form of financial phobia dubbed 'balance denial syndrome' or BDS.

Of the one in 5 people affected, nearly two thirds say they are worried that they might have less money than they thought, and may be put off buying something, while another 27% said they were scared their accounts might be in the red.

Among those who did check their balances, 60% used the internet, 44% a cash machine, with 28% simply waiting for their paper statement to arrrive through the post.
