Lloyds Extends Islamic Banking Trials

Lloyds TSB's Shariah-compliant banking services now available at more branches

15th November 2005

Lloyds TSB has announced that its Islamic banking trial will be extended to more of its UK branches, with customers in Newcastle, Preston, Sheffield, and parts of Birmingham now able to apply for Shariah-compliant current accounts and mortgages.

Lloyds became the first major high street bank to offer Islamic services when it launched a trial program in February 2005, limited to a handful of branches. The trial has now been extended to 22 branches nationwide, with more epected by the end of the year.

Islamic law prohibits the charging or receiving of interest, making most traditional financial services unsuitable for devout Muslims, and until recently the choice of compliant financial services providers was limited to small or overseas banks.
