HSBC Offers Price Protection Insurance to Debit Card Users
Price protection, common for credit card accounts, now available to debit card users
16th June 2005
HSBC is believed to be the first major UK bank to offer a price protection guarantee to its current account holders who pay for goods using a debit card.
Price protection, a common feature on credit cards, allows customers to claim back the difference if they buy a product and then find it available cheaper elsewhere.
The new HSBC policy will apply to brand name products such as electrical appliances, clothing, jewellery and so on, but will not apply to antiques, perishables, plants or animals, or sale goods amongst others.
Any claims must be made within 60 days of purchase, and claims are limited to a total of £5,000 a year.
The bank have introduced the new guarantee after market research suggested that it would be a more popular feature than a higher interest rate on current account balances.
