Boots Trials Ban on Cheques
High street retailer to ban use of cheques for a month
12th September 2006
High street health retailer Boots is to test a ban on accepting cheques for a month in its 46 stores in Surrey and Sussex, starting 26th September.
The company says that paying by cheque slows down till transactions and increases queues, and in any case payments by cheque have been much less frequent since the introduction of chip and pin. Barely 0.2% of purchases in Boots' stores were made by cheque, according to a spokesman.
Depending on customer reaction to the trial, the ban could be made permanent and nationwide by November.
Petrol chain Shell have already stopped accepting cheques, while supermarkets Tesco and Asda place restrictions on their use to try and encourage customers to pay by other means.
