First Direct Warns of Cash Machine Fraud

Major bank asks customers to limit ATM use

5th July 2004

Online bank First Direct has written to its top 10% cash machine users, asking them to consider using cash machines less often, by withdrawing larger amounts at a time.

The warning comes in the face of growing ATM fraud which totalled an estimated £39m last year.

Fraud methods range from simply looking over your shoulder to learn your PIN before stealing your card, to modifying cash machines to read your card number and retain your card for later recovery and use.

Annette Spencer of First Direct said that some users withdrew cash several times a day, and it is these customers who are most at risk from fraud.

Reaction to the advice has not been all positive, with police and others warning of the dangers of carrying too much cash.
