15th September 2006
A report by Apacs has confirmed that fee-free cash machines are overwhelmingly more popular than ones imposing a charge, with 95.5% of withdrawals nationally being made without charge.
The report also states that Britons are the most enthusiastic users of ATMs in Europe, with more withdrawals made than in any other country. Cash was taken out around 2.7 billion times in the UK in 2005, totalling £172bn, at an average rate of £5,455 a second.
The number of cash machines has more than doubled in the last six years and will soon be approaching the 60,000 mark.
