Huge Rise in Cash Machine Fraud
ATM fraud rises 85% to £61m, growing faster than credit card fraud
10th November 2004
The Association of Payment Clearing Services (APACS) has released 'Ten Top Tips' for cash machine safety after new figures show that ATM fraud has risen 85% over the last 12 months.
Methods of fraud range from the low-tech - looking over your shoulder while you type your PIN - to the high-tech, with 'skimming' machines or cameras being attached to cash machines to copy your card or record your PIN.
While cash card fraud rose faster than any other form of card fraud, APACS says that cash cards are still much safer than carrying cash.
