Card Skimmers Jailed
Gang of four cashpoint fraudsters jailed for four years each
12th August 2005
Four men have been jailed for 4 years each at Cardiff crown court after they admitted conspiracy to steal.
The fraudsters were caught after a raid by police, who suspected they were drug dealers, uncovered a convincing replica of a cash machine fascia.
The replica was of high enough quality to fool people into inserting their cards, but when they did their card's magentic strip details were sent by radio to the fraudsters to let them duplicate the card, while a mini camera recorded the PIN the unwitting victim typed in.
These details were enough to create a clone of the victim's cash card and use it to fraudulently withdraw money from any genuine cash machine.
It's thought that the four fraudsters could have netted up to £200,000 from their activites, and the presiding judge said that the sentence was purposefully severe to act as a deterrent.
Two of the men were illegal immigrants, and the other two asylum seekers, and the judge recommended that they be deported after serving their sentences.
Official figures show that the costs of card cloning have risen dramatically in recent years, and it's predicted that it will cost more than £100m in 2005.
