Cahoot Security Scare

Cahoot's online banking systems shut down for ten hours to repair urgent security problems

5th Novermber 2004

Cahoot, the online banking operation owned by Abbey, was shut down for ten hours while urgent repairs were made to close a security loophole.

The problem, which the company says has now been fixed completely, briefly allowed users to view details of other people's accounts. Cahoot stresses though that the loophole would not allow hackers to move money around, only view account details.

The security breach was an unforeseen result of a system upgrade 12 days ago, and the bank says that while there was no danger of financial loss, it needed to learn lessons from the episode.

Cahoot was launched four years ago and has sinced racked up 650,000 customers.
