Basic Bank Accounts

Basic bank accounts are a new style of current account aimed at people with poor credit ratings, people on benefits, and others who might not be able to get a standard current account.

They are limited in features - for example, they probably won't offer an overdraft or debit card - but they will offer at least a way to deposit cheques and withdraw from cash machines.

Increasingly, the government has preferred to pay benefits directly into bank accounts, and so it has put pressure on high street banks to offer accounts suitable for a wider range of customers.
