Barclays Target of Massive Phishing Attack
Customers of Barclays Bank warned to be on their guard
15th September 2006
Customers of Barclays plc are advised to be on their guard and not respond to any emails requesting personal details, as evidence of a large-scale phishing attack is uncovered.
Phishing is the term used for emails which attempt to fool people into giving away their financial details such as account numbers and passwords, which can then by used by fraudsters.
The latest round of phishing emails come in at least 61 seperate varieties, with titles such as "Security Update" and "Verify your data with Barclays", and it's believed that over 2 million have been sent in total.
Victims are encouraged to click through to an official-looking website and divulge their data in the name of tightening security.
As with all banks, Barclays make it clear that they will never ask for a 'reconfirmation' of personal details via email or a website, and customers should ignore the spoof emails.
