Barclays Announce Job Gains (And Losses)

Barclays Bank will employ 1000 extra branch staff, but will lose 800 backroom and IT workers

7th June 2004

Banking group Barclays has announced the creation of 1000 extra jobs at branches around the country, while at the same time rationalising it's backroom and IT support operations to remove duplication, leading to the loss of 800 jobs.

The changes follow a restructuring of the group's UK Banking operation, to bring several arms of operation under one structure.

Although staff will be redeployed wherever possible, and some positions will go through natural wastage, it is likely that at least some staff will leave the company.

The plans were developed with the agreement of unions.
