Alliance and Leicester Branch Closures

Alliance and Leicester Bank to close 46 high street branches, to concentrate on direct banking

17th June 2004

Banking group Alliance and Leicester have announced the closure of 46 of their 310 branches from October onwards.

The move will save the group around £5m a year, but will put the jobs of 310 staff at risk.

The closures are attributed to the increase in popularity of direct banking, with 80% of A&L's customers now banking online, over the phone or via cash machines.

A spokesperson for the company said that while they intend to keep a 'strong branch network', the closures reflect 'incresing use of direct channels' by their customers.

The affected branches will mainly be in London and the south east.
