A&L Heading for Half Billion Profit

Former building society to beat forecasts and show £500m profit in 2005

6th December 2005

Banking group Alliance & Leicester have predicted 2005 profits of half a billion pounds in their latest trading statement, beating previous forecasts.

The upbeat assessment is put down in part to increased customer use of direct banking, online and by telephone, rather than the more costly branch-based banking.

Increased business was also a factor, with the former building society saying that the first 9 months of 2005 saw as many new current accounts opened as in the whole of 2004.
