Abbey Double-bills 1000s of Customers
Computer glitch over the holiday weekend means many Abbey Visa debit card transactions double-billed
7th September 2006
Thousands of Abbey customers were double-billed for Visa debit card transactions after a computer glitch occured over the Bank Holiday weekend.
An overnight transaction processing run on the 29th of August went wrong and resulted in thousands of transactions appearing in the records twice, wrongly removing funds from customers account balances.
It's not been confirmed esactly how many customers were affected, but the bank insists that all duplicate payments will be reversed and that customers' accounts will be backdated to fix any problems the mistake caused.
A spokesperson for the bank said 'We are confident that this is a one-off problem and we don't know the root cause of it at the moment', while also apologising for any inconvenience caused to their customers.
