Identity Theft Costs £1.7bn Annually
Government minister says identity theft costs £35 per UK citizen every year
2nd February 2006
Home Office minister Andy Burnham has said that identity theft and fraud cost the UK an estimated £1.7bn a year, or £35 per person.
The figure is up over 30% from the last official estimate of £1.3bn in July 2002.
While the standard advice of shredding personal documents and being wary about who personal information is given to is still important, the minister said that the planned compulsory introduction of national identity cards would represent a 'major breakthrough' in the fight against ID theft.
