Rise in Debt Advice Seekers
Debt charity reports large increase in demand for its services
23rd June 2005
Leading debt advice charity, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), has reported a near-doubling of callers to it's helpline over the last year.
The charity received 25,000 calls from people seeking advice in May 2005, up from 13,000 a year earlier.
The increase is attributed to both the effects of interest rate rises filtering through combined with record levels of consumer debt, but the charity says that media attention on the debt situation has made more people aware of their options in coping with indebtedness problems.
Around one in three callers to the helpline go on to have a detailed counselling session with one of the charity's 300 staff, who have increased in number from 240 at the start of the year. It now says it is carrying out around 1,000 counselling sessions a week, and has a total of 43,000 people on formal debt management plans.
