£45m Fund Announced for Debt Advice

New government funding for non-profit debt advisors

24th June 2005

The Department of Trade and Industry has announced the establishment of a £45m fund to help non-profit organisations provide debt counselling.

The money will allow organisations such as Citizen's Advice to recruit and train extra debt advisors, providing help for those worst hit by burgeoning consumer debt.

The funds will be available from the autumn, and the government is inviting proposals from organisations on how they would use the cash, with preference given to those who already provide some measure of debt advice services.

The news comes against a backdrop of increasing worry over consumer debt, with many banks and other financial institutions announcing extra provision for bad debt as increasing numbers of consumers struggle with record debt levels.
