15% Rise in CCJs
Number of CCJs awarded rose by 15% in first half of 2005
29th September 2005
New figures show that the number of County Court Judgements (CCJs) awarded against consumers leapt by 15% in the first 6 months of 2005.
CCJs are the result of legal action taken in the county court by a creditor trying to obtain payment from a defaulting debtor.
The Registry Trust, which keeps track of CCJ numbers on behalf of the government, recorded 290,600 consumer CCJs, with over 84,000 commercial judgements.
A further 108,000 judgements were made against people who hadn't paid road tax, the first time that the DVLA has pursued debtors in this way. If these CCJs are included in the general consumer figures, the rise would be even higher at 57%.
The chairman of the Registry Trust, Malcolm Hurlston, said that the increased number of judgements was 'clear proof of a deteriorating economy'.
