Professor Calls for Tougher ID Fraud Action
Professor says identity fraud is too easy
15th August 2005
A criminologist has called for tougher action against identity fraud, in a report commissioned by credit card company Capital One.
The report, by Professor Martin Gill, concludes that ID theft was 'too easy' in the UK, and we could learn much from the more approach taken in the USA which makes life much harder for would-be fraudsters.
He called for new measures to be taken, including:
- Consumers to get a free copy of their creit report every year, to help them spot suspicious activity
- Better sharing of data between government agencies and departments
- Credit agencies to share fraud alerts among themselves, so ID theft victims only need to report the fraud once
- Increased resources for the police to fight the problem
Identity fraud is one of the fastest growing crimes, with an estimated cost of £1.3bn last year.
